Dirt Bike Tires Terrain Guide – When to Use What Tires

Dirt bikes are off-road types of motorcycles, which are designed to be lightweight, fast, nimble and very powerful to withstand the harsh off-road conditions. These bikes cannot use any type of tires but those specifically designed for them. Furthermore, the specific dirt bike you opt for should be able to withstand the type of terrains you will be riding your dirt bike on. If you are looking for dirt bike tires, you need to know they come in different forms, colors, material of construction, tread patterns, sizes and shapes to ensure they can withstand the different terrains. So, what features should you look at while buying tires for dirt bikes to be used in different terrains?

If you will be riding on a hard terrain, you need to go for dirt bike tires made from very soft and flexible outer rubber. Soft and very flexible rubber will ensure they can grip the hard terrain without sliding or skidding. Furthermore, you should go for tires, which have knobs that are close to each other since they will also improve the traction and footing. The knobs do not have to be very long as those for soft terrains.  Such tires should be able to stand desert and hard-pack riding events.

What about those who want to use their dirt bikes on soft terrains, what kinds of tires should they go for?  If your dirt bike will be used on soft terrain that has muddy, sandy or loamy conditions, you need to go for tires with hard rubber compound and long knobs. They knobs should be paddle shaped and have large gaps between each other to avoid mud clogging them, as this will make them impossible to use. Also, ensure their front tires have pointed knobs to be able to dig into the soft terrain.  At their middles, they should closely resemble paddle tires.

People who will be riding in intermediate terrain, which is between soft and hard terrain also need their own special kinds of dirt bike tires. The tires should have knobs that are moderately spaced, not as closely space as the ones for hard terrain while putting the knobs so far away will make them hard to use. Outer rubber used should be somewhat soft to be able to provide sufficient traction. However, if you will be riding your bike on totally sandy and very plain, you need paddle like shapes dirt bike tires. This very aggressive with large and far away spaced scoops will ensure they can give you the traction you need on such conditions, even on sand dunes.
